The use of synthetic fluxes in secondary steelmaking not only improves the properties of top slag and steel quality but also increases the production cost. Ladle furnace (LF) slag can be used as a replacement to synthetic fluxes owing to its chemical and mineralogical compositions. Valorization of LF slag helps in sustainable steelmaking and also reduces steel production cost.
EAF Slag is produced in an Electric Arc Furnace. The visual appearance of the slag is a dark greyish colour. With respect to other slags (blast furnace slag), it can be tougher, with a density of about 20 - 25% greater than basalt or BFS. When crushed, the pieces have a typical cubical shape.
· LF is actually a special form of the electric arc furnace. In a non-oxidizing atmosphere, the electric arc heat generated between the graphite electrode and the molten steel is used as the heat source. Through arc heating, argon blowing and stirring at the bottom of the coating, the slag with high alkalinity is produced to reduce slag.
